Jammu & Kashmir

Jammu & Kashmir is a trekker's paradise. However, due to the recent political turmoil it is advisable to check the situation before travelling to Jammu & Kashmir. The main tourist attractions of Jammu & Kashmir are Amarnath, Gulmarg, Jammu, Leh, Pahalgam, and Srinagar. Amarnath has the famous limestone cave which is sacred to the Hindus because of the lingam , which is a symbol of Lord Shiva. A trek to the cave on a full moon night is a very gratifying experience.

Gulmarg : literally means the "meadow of flowers" and true to its name it has excellent natural scenic beauty. Jammu is situated on the plains below the mountains, and hence, is the winter capital of Jammu & Kashmir. Both Jammu and Gulmarg offer excellent facilities for adventure sports like para-gliding, skiing and trekking.

Leh : is the main town of the Buddhist region of Jammu & Kashmir called Ladakh. It has many Buddhist monastries like Shey, Thiksey, and Hemis . Dominating the skyline of the town is the Leh Palace built on a hill in the Tibetan architectural style. The Zanskar region of Ladakh offers excellent treks like: Padam to Darchar, Lamayaru and Kishtwar.

Pahalgam : is a hill resort at 2130 metres with idyllic surroundings, enhanced by the confluence of the Lidder and Seshnag rivers. Like all other regions of Jammu & Kashmir, Pahalgam also offers good trekking opportunities.

Srinagar : is the capital of Jammu & Kashmir and is believed to be founded by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century B.C. after his daughter, Charumati, was enchanted by the Dal Lake. Srinagar offers excellent recreational facilities of boating and staying in boat houses.
